It has a warm friendly atmosphere among friendly local neighbors with Caribbean culture all around and local shopping bars and restaurants nearby for some of the best tasting Caribbean food Belize has to offer.  Experience live drummers, karaoke, the annual Lobster fest and annual Placencia Arts Festival are held here right here along the Placencia Sidewalk.

We are the closest tourist destination to all the islands and cayes that offer the best snorkeling, diving, fishing and recreation in the country of Belize. Placencia also has one of the major beaches in Belize for swimming, kayaking, windsurfing and sunbathing.

Placencia Peninsula

Once a traditional fishing village, the village of Placencia has emerged as the fastest-growing tourist destination in Belize.

The peninsula is 16 miles long, with the Caribbean Sea to the east and the Placencia Lagoon to the west.

Placencia sits in the Stann Creek District (one of 6 districts) in the southern part of Belize.

The peninsula is informally divided into 5 sections (informally because the Government of Belize has not yet formalized the boundaries on the peninsula. Only two settlements are officially recognized as villages).

Beaches - Swimming in Placencia

The Placencia peninsula is 17 miles long.  What is interesting about the peninsula is that it was not formed like many island beaches around the world, which are from dead crustaceans and other ocean and sea critters...

Source Of Sand

It was built from sediments from the South Stann Creek River. This river snakes its way down through the Maya Mountains  - and the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Reserve - over thousands of years, bringing with it what you see, and enjoy as the Placencia Peninsula, today.

Public Access To Beach

There is a 66ft reserve (Queen's Land), therefore you have public access to the beach anywhere on the Placencia Peninsula. In Belize, all land up to 66 feet from the high water level is considered national land or “Queen’s Land”.  It also means that it is to be kept accessible to the public and free from development.
The Belize Laws state: By powers of the National Lands Act (Revised Edition 2003), the Lands and Surveys Department has jurisdiction over the 66 feet reserve and the seabed (National Land). Although the use of the seabed and the 66 feet reserve are regulated under the National Lands Act, Section 6 Clause 1, the construction of over-water structures on the seabed falls under the Belize Building Act, Chapter 131 of the Laws of Belize Revised Edition 2003, which is implemented by the Central Building Authority.

Driving in Placencia

Unlike the sandy shores of the islands (cayes [pronounced: keys]), such as the beautiful Placencia cayes, driving on the beach with a vehicle is not permitted in Placencia.

This is due to the fact that the sand on the islands is finer and hence more compact, forming a sturdier base.

In contrast, the sand in Placencia consists of larger grains that are not as densely packed. If you are not equipped with a 4 x 4 vehicle, you may find yourself stuck in the sand.

The most effective mode of transportation here is a golf cart, which can be rented from various Placencia Belize rental services.

This situation is also a key reason behind the establishment of the Placencia Village Sidewalk, initiated by Archbishop Hulse, to facilitate easier movement for him and local residents throughout the village.

Strolling through the "soft sand" will provide you with a fantastic cardio workout.
